Our History
Founded in 1940, as The
Lancaster Studio of Music by Kathryn Grube, the Conservatory has been a
continuing source of music education in Lancaster. A significant
development in the school's history occurred in 1958 when Dr. Mary B.
Vyner succeeded Mrs. Grube and changed the name to The Lancaster
Conservatory of Music. Her philosophy was based on the European concept
of a conservatory as a school for Music Education. Dr. Vyner and her
husband Louis, a founder and first conductor of the Lancaster Symphony
Orchestra, were tireless advocates for music education in public
schools for all children. After Dr. Vyner's death in 1996, three of her
students accepted the challenge of providing guidance for the
Conservatory. In June of 1996, The Lancaster Conservatory of Music was
incorporated as a non-profit educational institution and a Board of
Directors was established to supply day to day management as well as
plans for continued growth and development. Today, the Conservatory proudly stands as a living
memorial to the Vyner's musical legacy in the Lancaster Community.
Our Curriculum
The Conservatory provides individualized instruction to meet the needs of our students. Lessons are available from the primary level through preparation for college auditions. Adult and homeschooled students are always most welcome. We encourage our students to participate in a variety of musical programs that may include recitals, festivals, ensembles and chamber music concerts. We offer private instruction in: Piano, Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, Voice, Theory, Composition and Early Childhood Music Studies.
